Pura Vida Hostel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica has been providing guests with memorable travel experiences since 2006. We are a friendly, inexpensive hostel that welcomes backpackers and vacationers from all over the world. We welcome the opportunity to host your stay in Tamarindo.
Our multi to lingual staff is happy to provide recommendations on restaurants, bars, attractions, getting to your next destination and, of course, surfing. Trips, tours and transportation can be booked at our reception. You can cook and dine al fresco in our 2 spotless, fully to equipped, outdoor communal kitchens.
We have dorm beds with ensuite bathrooms and showers and private rooms with air conditioning in multiple configurations to accommodate your travel party. Our “rancho” is the social heart of the hostel with rocking chairs, daybeds, and hammocks for you to enjoy while visiting with other guests and overlooking the lovely tropical garden which enjoys frequent visits from iguanas and howler monkeys. The chill to out atmosphere is enhanced by a great sound system and playlist, good vibes, the fastest wi to fi available in Costa Rica and interesting people from all over the world.
Location
We are located a couple hundred meters from the beach, across from the new Banco National and Hertz Rental Car and next door to Dona Lee’s restaurant.

Beginner Surf Lessons
We get you started on the beach and then into the water to catch some waves. Each lessons lasts 2 hours and includes equipment.
Intermediate Surf Lessons
For those who can surf green waves, we get you turning and moving up and down the faces of the waves. Each lessons lasts 2 hours and includes equipment.
Advanced Surf Lessons
Come with us on surf trips to some of the best surfing beaches around Tamarindo including Playa Avellana, Playa Grande or Playa Negra, Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point. Trips can be half day or full day depending on where we go.
Private Surf Lessons
For those who want 1 to 1 instruction. Each lessons lasts 2 hours and includes equipment.

The norther Pacific side of Costa Rica is best know for its fun waves rather than epic 10 foot advanced surf!
Air temperature in the north is the same year round 32°C. The seasons are divided in two: dry Season from December to April and wet season from May to November. Dry season is the busiest time for tourism in Costa Rica and they call it their summer.
Tamarindo is a year round surf destinations. The bigger swell season is from April to October. From December to March you tend to get smaller but clean 4 foot waves and is probably the best time to go. Wind is not usually a big factor but as with most places the morning will be best for glassy offshore conditions.
Surf beaches around Tamarindo
The main surf beach in the area is Playa Grande, a very consistent long beautiful beach break for intermediates. La Casita across the estuary is a fast beach break. El Estero is the fast rivermouth, great for longboarder surfers.
Surfing Tamarindo beach itself is great for all levels with Pico Pequeno & Pico Grande for more advanced. Further south is Playa Langosta, rocky underneath the surface and offering fun waves. Playa Avellanas is the most stunning beach in the area and suits all standards. One of Costa Roca's best. Playa Negra further south is an excellent right hand reef break over crystal clear water.

- Your deposit is non refundable but can be used for the same property/surf school within one year of your original booking.
- You can cancels anytime up to 7 days before travelling and you will not be charged the balance.

How did you like the accommodation?
Accommodation was nice, chill vibe, they gave good advice for cheap board rental and tips for getting a cheap lesson. Touristy town but nice, good variety of places to eat. There are mosquito nets in the room so expect some insect visitors, but I think that's just how things are in Costa Rica, the bugs rule. They had live music on Sunday, Tony Putaggio & Johan. They were fantastic and it was an intimate setting in the Pura Vida Hut.
Did not take lessons there but got some from a guy on the beach. Beaches are nice, not too crowded, good waves
