Our long to established Sagres Surfing Hostel, here in Portugal aims to create a cosy home from home atmosphere for travellers. The house is perfectly situated within walking distance of local amenities, the town centre – and crucially, the bars and the three stunning beaches on Sagres’s doorstep.
Location
Sagres is at “The End of the World” which makes it kind of a big deal. But to us, being at the most Southwesterly point of Europe means awesome surfing beaches and stunning surroundings – a playground for both beginners and experienced surfers.

This area of Portugal is a year round surf destination and has the warmest sea water in the country. In the summer months you can surf in just shorts or a shortie and it doesn't get dark until 10pm so you can surf all day long! The coastline is part of the protected natural park with 50 kilometres of protected beaches with no large towns or high rise tourist accommodations. Instead you will discover beautiful pristine beaches and small traditional towns a far cry from the main overrun Algarve tourist spots.
Amado beach is the areas best beginner/intermediate surf beach and a great starting point. Amado is surrounded by many other great surf breaks with options for all standards. Praia da Cordoama is one of the most picturesque beaches in Portugal, a long stretch of sand protected by cliffs, a great intermediate spot. Praia do Castelejo beside it is even more consistent.
There's a dozen beaches further north all worth exploring including Arrifana & Amoreira, two very consistent beginner/intermediate beach breaks.
Furthest south is the laid back surf town of Sagres. The beaches East of Sagres such as Zavial & Martinhal are usually calm and require a big swell to work, they are a great alternative if the surf on the beaches on the West coast are too big. There are many hidden spots around Sagres some of which will require an SUV to get too but are well worth it especially for the more experienced.

How did you like the accommodation?
It was super clean and cozy and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The location was ideal; shops, bars and restaurants are very conveniently located a short and easy stroll away.
How were the surf lessons?
Oh my goodness, the instructors were fantastic, really patient, super clear in the lessons and offered real constructive personal feedback during and after the lessons. My surf game has definitely leveled up and I'm grateful and delighted.

How did you like the accommodation?
Hostel room. I stayed in the 6 bed mixed shared, we had a great room and beds with Curtains! Excellent privacy in the room. Ours had a bathroom with 2 sinks, loo and shower. I never saw it messy, they must be cleaned while we are out because it was always clean.
How were the surf lessons?
Amazing time. We spent most of the week with Ficho and Juliette, some time with Mika and Michael. They were amazing instructors and really positive. Turned the whole class into a family. Took us to the beach and got us all sorted with the kit, wetsuits and surfboards. Constant attention both in and out of the water, always looking out for us making sure we are OK and getting the most out of the lessons. Standing in the shallows and watching our technique, giving us extra tips while we're in the sea. Couldn't as for more.
How did you like the accommodation?
We've enjoyed every stay at the camp so far. It has a very special atmosphere, the whole town of Sagres does. The hostel is cosy, offers a great breakfast and delicious family meals and bbqs. The staff is always helpful and friendly.
How were the surf lessons?
The surf coaches are highly motivated and qualified, we've learned a lot so far - we will always come back another time!
How did you like the accommodation?
Having never surfed properly before and travelling solo, I was perhaps understandably unsure how it would pan out beforehand. I needn't have worried, it was a great trip! The hostel was clean and well looked after, Cam and Stella from NZ were great hosts including the other staff. Plenty to do, whether it was taco night, burger night or drinking at the hangout. Not to mention the famous boat party! Sagres has a nice and laidback outdoors vibe with enough to do if there for the week.
How were the surf lessons?
Surf lessons were a good laugh, the instructors all top people. A good opportunity to meet people from different countries! As a non surfer I say give it a go and you won't regret it, though you'll probably spend all of following week recovering ;)

My Boyfriend and I fell in love with this place !
Cam, Stella and the family crew definitely made us feel at home. People from all over the world all seem to feel that way at the Algarve Surf Camp.
Amazing breakfast every morning, packed lunch every day, awesome surf lessons (optional) with great instructors, "burger night", "tacos night", drinks at the hangout, boat parties ... or even chill watching a surf competition.
But most importantly, Cam, Stella and the family crew are all people willing to share their love and passion for their lifestyle and region.
How did you like the accommodation?
I’ve stayed at three hostels (1 in NZ, 2 in Portugal) and this was definitely the best ever! Cam and Stella are the best hosts ever, this is a place that feels like home. Very clean and well furnished. Everyone has a good vibe here, this is Defs not a place where everyone is anti social etc. Close to two main beaches and supermarket/town/bars. The breakfast is delicious and nutritious. Can definitely see myself staying forever!!! This is a really well kept secret. The other hostel (lagos) is apparently louder so if u like a more laid back lifestyle this is suitable. However in saying that, there’s something on roughly every second night , I’ve been to a BBQ, a kiwi night and live music night which were all extremely fun!
How were the surf lessons?
I also did the Surf lessons through algarve Surf school w Mitch and Junior who were amazing teachers. I’m already coming back in the next two weeks because I just had soooo much fun!!
How did you like the accommodation?
Algarve surf hostel was great! You can walk easily to the beach, bars/cafes and the buss stop is also closeby. Sagres is a cute beautiful town and there's life everywhere.
The volunteers and people that worked at the hostel where super friendly and made the best breakfast ever! Every day two home made fresh quiches, cakes etc. And there is a so called 'lunch station'. You can make fresh breads and take for lunch! First time I saw a 'lunch station' at a hostel, super nice!
The garden at the hostel is very chilled. You have different areas to relax alone or mix with the other travellers.
I would definitely come back! If you are in Sagres go to the Algarve surf hostel!
