Location
Sagres is the main surf town in the South of Portugal, offering a wide and varied selection of waves all within a very small area.
It is a place privileged by mother to nature, with coastlines facing both South and West. That is the reason why the area is known for having the highest swell consistency in all Continental Europe.
The little town at the end of the world has plenty to offer besides access to huge number of beaches and surf spots. You´ll find a great selection of cafes, bars, and restaurants serving everything from traditional local dishes to modern international cuisine.
Historic forts and buildings cover the coastline and surrounding villages of the Costa Vincentina to Portugal´s largest national park, right on your doorstep.

Tonel
Level: All Levels
Tonel is the most popular surf beach in Sagres and is within walking distance of the town. It is a beach break with a large distinctive rock formation in the middle. It faces West and picks up the W and NW swells. The peaks are spread over the full length of the beach, offering a selection of waves. Depending on the swell size this beach break ranges from beginner friendly white water and green waves up to advanced and pro level barrels. Over the winter is when there are larger swells and is more suitable for advanced surfers, but in the summer it is a much friendlier size, still with enough power and size on days to suit the more adventurous surfers.

This area of Portugal is a year round surf destination and has the warmest sea water in the country. In the summer months you can surf in just shorts or a shortie and it doesn't get dark until 10pm so you can surf all day long! The coastline is part of the protected natural park with 50 kilometres of protected beaches with no large towns or high rise tourist accommodations. Instead you will discover beautiful pristine beaches and small traditional towns a far cry from the main overrun Algarve tourist spots.
Amado beach is the areas best beginner/intermediate surf beach and a great starting point. Amado is surrounded by many other great surf breaks with options for all standards. Praia da Cordoama is one of the most picturesque beaches in Portugal, a long stretch of sand protected by cliffs, a great intermediate spot. Praia do Castelejo beside it is even more consistent.
There's a dozen beaches further north all worth exploring including Arrifana & Amoreira, two very consistent beginner/intermediate beach breaks.
Furthest south is the laid back surf town of Sagres. The beaches East of Sagres such as Zavial & Martinhal are usually calm and require a big swell to work, they are a great alternative if the surf on the beaches on the West coast are too big. There are many hidden spots around Sagres some of which will require an SUV to get too but are well worth it especially for the more experienced.

How did you like the accommodation?
I had excellent time staying at this place and taking surf classes from their instructors.
The place was very clean and comfortable, breakfast was good everyday.
I'd highly recommend both staying and taking classes from their amazing instructors!
How were the surf lessons?
Instructors were paying attention on every move and give constant feedback to correct your technique. They cared a lot about safety and choose different beaches everyday depending on wind/wave situation.
How did you like the accommodation?
The perfect surf school for people of all abilities and ages. Myself and my partner stayed in the surf camp and did a three day course and have already thought about plans to return next year for at least a 5 day course. Comfortable sleep too with so much beautiful touches around the house which don't go unnoticed.
How were the surf lessons?
The teaching was excellent - the knowledge of the environment was so reassuring due to being mainly local instructors and they also made every lesson fun and enjoyable. The equipment was top notch and the morale was 10/10. Although there were cheaper options around, this was definitely worth the money in terms of equipment, getting the best surf (if the waves weren't up to standard in one place, we would move to another), quality of teaching, feeling welcome and knowing some 'secret surf spots' so you get to avoid the crowds!
How did you like the accommodation?
It's very rare to find places like this. This surfcamp is absolutely perfect in everything. Rooms are super clean and beautiful with such an attention to details that I've rarely seen in all my traveling. Common areas are always tidy and clean with all necessary for an hassle free vacation.
How were the surf lessons?
Surfing lessons are so much fun, and instructors take you to all the most beautiful beaches in the area teaching you how to stand on a board in no time. I rarely go back to the same place twice but here I will for sure. Highly recommended!
How did you like the accommodation?
Highly recommended!
I spent four nights there and I felt very welcomed immediately:
The staff is super helpful, the house is well maintained, cosy and set in a way that makes it very easy to connect with other guests. 5-stars breakfast included.
How were the surf lessons?
Carlos is a very knowledgeable instructor, with the perfect tips to improve your technique!
How did you like the accommodation?
Absolute little piece of paradise on earth. The place is super tidy and well organized with everything to make you feel comfortable during your stay. The staff was always very professional and with great vibes! The location couldn’t be better as it is literally 5 min walk to the nearest beach and less than 10 to the center of the town... Wrap up your surfing day with a nice barbecue at the surfcamp with sunset views!!!! Thanks guys!
How were the surf lessons?
Want to learn how to surf? This is the place to go!!!
How did you like the accommodation?
The Surf School to choose if you want to learn to surf!
Yes, the hostel is good and the staff are friendly and helpful... but all they really want to do is to teach you how to surf, and you will learn!!!
How were the surf lessons?
A great bunch of people who are truly dedicated and equipped to teach all levels.
How did you like the accommodation?
Friendly staff, great surf instructors, clean and freshly renovated. This is the place to stay if your looking for a nice relaxed surf trip

How did you like the accommodation?
The room was nice but a bit small for 3 people and the luggage. But I didn't spend much time in the room anways, so it was fine. The pillows could be better, mine was quite hard.
The bathrooms, kitchen and dining area are modern and clean. I like the interior design and the colour concept.
The outdoor area could have been nicer and more inviting to sit outside. A lounging area like the one inside would make a big difference.
The breakfast was very good with fresh bread, boiled eggs, coffee, juice, joghurt, müsli, sweet spreads, fruits, cheese and ham.
The staff was nice and helpful if you had a question.
Sagres is a small relaxing town with some nice bars and restaurants. It's good if you're there for surfing, but if not, it can get a bit boring after a few days. It's worth stopping by, exploring the beaches and watch the sunset at the lighthouse. Make sure you have a look at the big pottery shop. It's worth it!
I've enjoyed my stay there with SUP, yoga, surfing, fresh fish and relaxing on the beach.
PS: If you have the chance to be in Sagres on a wednesday night, join the party croud on the main street and check out the bars.
How were the surf lessons?
The instructors I had in my lessons were all nice and helpful. I've liked the fact that they drove us to different beaches, depending on the conditions to make sure we get waves which were suitable for our level.
I've had a good time there surfing. :)
