Season
Best time to go depends on your level above. July, August & September are the peak tourist months.
This is where you surf Europe's best coast line and let the fun begin. There are over 12 surf breaks along the Ericeira coast, with different options for all standards. With so much choice you'll feel like a kid in a sweet shop! The area was introduced in the Stormriders Surf Guide to Europe with the heading "Enter the Heartland".
World Surf Reserve
In 2011 it was awarded the title of 'World Surf Reserve', there are only 2 other places in the world that share the title: Santa Cruz, US and Manly, Australia.
If it is your first surfing holiday to Ericeira then head straight to Foz do Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches south of town, they are perfect beginner and intermediate surf spots. Closer to town is Praia do Sul. Another great beginner beach breaks. All best at mid tide but surfable at high and low tide also.
For Intermediates you have the reliable and safe reef break Ribeira d'Ilhas, which host the WSL World qualifying series surf championships every year. And for the more adventurous you have the world class Coxos. That's just naming a few, there are too many surf breaks to mention here!
Don't forget to explore further up the coast - 25 minutes away is Santa Cruz and an hour away is Peniche, home to the World renowned Supertubos and host of the Rip Curl Pro since 2009. 30 minutes south of Lisbon is the Cascais coast with the famous Praia do Guincho surf beach. And when north winds are blowing you can venture further south towards Carcevelos beach and the other surf spots along the Lisbon coast.

How were the surf lessons?
The surf lessons were great. I went in a intermediate level and was left to my own devices once the guys were happy with me. The beach was great on the first day but had a horrible rip on the second. Nonetheless, it didn't spoil the experience and would definitely recommend the team at Blue Ocean.

How were the surf lessons?
I took surf lessons in Ericeira, Portugal at the Ribeiro D'hilas beach. The blue ocean surf school was situated in the really nice looking new building right at the beach- a lovely place. It was very easy to get around with the staff, book the lessons and get additional information.
The surf lessons were of contrast, because it really depended on the number of 'students'. We took 4 lessons, the first 2 were just too crowded, so you didn't really surf- they just pushed our boards on the waves, you didn't really do it on your own. To be fair, you always had the possibility to seperate yourself, however then you could get hardly any advice.
Important: Although we were so many guys, you always felt safe.
The other 2 lessons were way better- less students, more time to talk to the (very kind) staff, more improvement, more fun. But it is hard to have small groups in high season i know.
So all in all, you should definitely try to catch a smaller group and have the maximum fun.

How were the surf lessons?
The lessons were ok as long as you went early or late in the day. The instructors worked really hard. Avoid the mid-day lessons as there were just too many in a class in August.
Also Ribiera beach is funky, cool and a great place to chill out. However, the rocks makes for quite a challenging surf.

How were the surf lessons?
Blue Ocean was a great school with friendly and patient instructors who kept you safe, motivated and having fun. The beach at Ribeira was our favourite in the Ericeira region. It has smooth consistent waves which were very forgiving for beginners. You had plenty of time to paddle and set yourself on the board. Very rewarding. The natural rock ledge of the surfing spot at Ribeira means the water is like glass - and there was no risk of a bump if you use common sense and jump off the board before it gets too shallow or like my son simply ride the wave to shore and step off.

How were the surf lessons?
Yes we liked it all and the instructors looked after us well. For some, the walk to the Riberia de Illhas was quite a challenge. The waves were very nice, the rocky reef beneath feet was different to the sands of Donegal!

How were the surf lessons?
Initially was disappointed that we had to walk up to another beach for surf school when there were lots of surf schools at the beach right in front of the villas we stayed at. But the other beach was much bigger and a better option form what we could see. The class on the first day was much too crowded and our youngest daughter aged 11 was in a group with mainly adults and we felt she didn't get a lot of help. The second day was better with a smaller number.

How were the surf lessons?
We booked lessons on two sprays and had a blast. Instructors were great and equipment was fantastic. There were waves all the time and was great. The sea floor is rock that is flat and your feet/ankles can get sore but once you realise this, you are a bit more aware. The surf bar food and drink was fab.

How were the surf lessons?
The surf lessons were superb - the instructors going the extra mile to really observe and advise us all appropriately. My 7 year old son and 13 year old were given special attention and classes were not cancelled when they were not full.
The instructors were very friendly - even when "off duty" in their local bar which we were lucky enough to find. The beach was small and safe. Only a few metres opening where there were no rocks. We visited the neighbouring reef and there was no gap!

How were the surf lessons?
We loved surfing at Blue Ocean Surf School. We learned a lot and felt confident in the water.
Surfing was a challenge for me but I had no surfing experience. Conditions are tough to deal with but I imagine that would be a plus for more experienced surfers. My boyfriend loved it...Ulysses, the instructor, was great craic!
Ulisses was a brilliant instructor, along with Mario, and the location excellent
The surf lessons were very well run and were very good for all levels, as they pulled you aside and asked you to do different things so you can progress to the next level
Surf lessons with Ulisses were very good. I was a bit apprehensive about surfing the reef when I saw if first but he put me at ease and has us all up on the board in no time. Top bloke aswell
We had great surf lessons and Ulysses had me and the kids standing on the boards after a few lessons. Loved the location where Ulysses was
Got some good surf in and Ulises took us to a few different beaches (we went about 50mins south, near Lisbon as the swell was massive and too dangerous on the reef). The girls found the lessons good but I have surfed quite a bit and found that although I said I was intermediate and want to improve, I wasn't pushed so didn't feel I got too much out of the lessons apart from equipment. Maybe guiding would be better next time
The lessons were fun and Ulisses is a real old school dude :-) I was pleasantly surprised at the warm water temperature. His gear was good, by and large - he had a variety of boards, the suits were in good nick and ideal for the water temperature. His rotational method is excellent for beginners and introduces the idea of the line-up well, as beginner lessons can often be quite chaotic, especially when the water is crowded
The surf was great and Ulisses really looked after us. He was completely flexible with the lessons as Aoife decided not to take her 3rd lesson and Louis also wanted to take a morning off mid way through. He was fine with me taking the extra kids lessons so myself & Louis ended up doing 5 lessons
The surfing went well, Ulysses looked after Steve who now has the surfing bug
The surfing went really well - Ulisses is definitely a character! We had planned on moving on - however we were all just so taken with Ericeira - we actually ended up spending all of our time there. It was exactly what the doctor ordered.
My daughter surfed with Ulisses every day of our holiday and really enjoyed it, she can't wait to surf again
Ulisses, is a very nice teacher. We really enjoyed the classes. The beaches are really very nice
The surf was great, almost every day I got waves and Amy enjoyed her lessons with Ulisses. The beaches are great.
The surf lessons seemed to go well and Ulisses was great
The surfing was good-Ulysses was a great guy and took real interest in the kids and they thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience
Surf lessons with Ulysses and Rodriquez were great. Rodriguez who was with our boys most was excellent - v positive and patient. All in all we loved the area, the surf and the whole experience
Surf with Ulisses was good, the kids found him different to what they had been used to. They hired boards from Boardculture, across the road. They were excellent, made us welcome and laughed and joked through the whole encounter. It was a pleasure to give him money, you know what i mean. The beaches are really nice, the water was colder than i expected and after two days with Ulisses, we had three days on Matadouro beside us. Day four was flat and a non runner, but loved the overall esxperience - Surf with Ulisses was good, the kids found him different to what they had been used to. Had a good surf lesson with Ulisses and his crew were excellent with the children. Board hire was more expensive than expected and in hind sight it would have been more sensible to take my own board so will do that for next time.
Ulysses looked after us very well. We felt the quality of equipment and the amount involvement from the instructors was much greater than other surf schools we saw
Jake and the children really enjoyed the surfing - they are in the process of putting together a thank you note for their instructor Flavio
Surf lessons were good, Grace really enjoyed it. Ulysses good fun if a but disorganised !!! Overall we had a great time x
