When it comes to the best pre-Christmas surf holiday it is all about looking close to home.  The majority of Europe may be experiencing winter weather, but flying south to the beautiful Spanish Canary Islands will bring warm weather and great waves.  Even closer to home and a great excuse for a weekend away are the stunning waves of the surf reserve of Ericeira, Portugal.  So it's all about escaping the masses wrestling for Christmas present shopping, and flying off to a perfect surf holiday break.  Here are a few top tips for each of the destinations:

  • 1- Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

If there is one place that guarantees you as much peace and quiet, or crazy late night parties, it's Fuerteventura.  The calm beauty of the volcanic plains and sparkling waves belies the fiestas that go on until dawn.  The island invites you to do as little or as much as you like, providing great surf during the winter months.  Make the most of your time there by staying at the tranquil resort of La Concha, ideal for couples looking to unwind; whereas for active families, stay at Las Marismas for lots of entertainment and easy access into the town of Corralejo.

  • 2- Lanzarote, Canary Islands

It may not be one of the first places you think of to go surf, but with excellent waves and temperatures during the day up in the 20s Lanzarote is a great pre-Christmas surf holiday.  The sunny island is only 60km by 20km, so is easy to explore and discover different waves.  Just like its counterpart of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote has breathtaking volcanic scenery.  Think majestic volcanoes, lava trails which lead you to the seemingly endless sand beaches where once lava met ocean to form the island.  Escape to Sands Beach resort for the perfect couple getaway as the modern complex is only 400m away from the town centre, and even runs along the beach.

  • 3- Ericeira, Portugal

Officially one of only three surf reserves world wide, Ericeira has beach after beach that offers world class surf.  The small fishing town has kept its Portuguese charm throughout the centuries and continues protects its waves and culture to this day.  Spend your surf holiday discovering different surf spots during the day, before treating yourself to the delicious local seafood by night.... Then when you fancy venturing further afield, Lisbon lies only 40 minutes away- ideal for a quick day trip if you fancy playing tourist before getting back to the waves.
