You have decided to learn to surf, but where do you start?  There are lots of things that you can do to prepare for that first surf session in the run up, and even once you start. So here are our top tips for learning to surf:

  • 1- Get your fitness up

Before you hit the surf for the first time, work on increasing fitness levels.  Whether you go swimming, running, or simply to workout classes throughout the week, getting your heart rate up, sweating, and out of breath does wonders for your stamina and your fitness in the surf.

  • 2- Book surf lessons

When you're learning to surf book yourself in for a course.  It'll give you a chance to get feedback and instruction from your surf instructor, feel really good when you improve, and something to look forward to every week or so.

  • 3- Top it up

If you really want to learn to surf, then keep your surf ability topped up with regular surf sessions, lessons, and trips. It will be fun, as well as get a great way to keep your rhythm in the waves going.

  • 4- Surf charts

Learning how to read surf weather forecasts can really help. Get someone who knows to teach you how to interpret surf reports, so you know where to surf that will suit your surf level... in particular learn about the best tides for your favourite surf break, then which winds make the waves better or worse, and even what swell size produces the best conditions.

  • 5- Reward...

With all your hard work having fun in the surf, reward yourself by surfing Fuerteventura, or a surf camp in Portugal.  It's all about enjoying your new sport, and there are few things better than surf holidays in the hot sunshine and beautiful surroundings to keep you motivated.
