Downtown Lisbon city itself does not have a beach and walking around siteseeing you may be oblivious to the fact that dozens of beautiful white sandy surf beaches are only a 5 minute car drive away (Or 4 train stops!)
The surrounding beaches pick up all the swells the Atlantic have to offer making it one of the most consistent surf destinations in the World.
The area has a good selection for all standards. Closest to the city would be Caxias & Santo Amaro de Oeiras. Caxias is a beautiful beach that on its day can produce perfect lefthander barrels. Oeiras is more of a winter wave and is one of the best waves in Portugal.
Next stop is Carcavelos, probably Portugal's most famous wave. Its one of the best beach breaks in Europe and regularly hosts National competitions. It suits all standards, a perfect place to learn and a great place to score some fast beach barrels with multiple peaks along the 1km stretch of beach.
There are many other spots along the coastline that runs from Lisbon out to Estoril & Cascais. Long boarders will love Sao Pedro and short boarders will thrive on spots like Poca and Sao Joao. Then on the other side of Cascais there is the stunning long white sandy Guincho beach, one of Portugal's most consistent surf spots, usually best in the morning as it can be exposed to afternoon onshore winds.
Across the river Tejo in Setubal, a 20 minute drive away, is the less crowded Costa de Caparica. Perfect for beginner/intermediates as the man made jetties create nice consistent waves. The beach stretches for 30kms and all of it is surfable!
Lisbon is also a great base to explore other regions. The surf mecca of Ericeira is only 35 minutes drive away and 1 hour north is Peniche, host of the WSL World Tour every October.

How did you like the accommodation?
In general is a normal hostel, but it has so many particular features about the walls, chairs and staff that make u really feel at home. Especially the staff is totally kind, gentle and funny... gonna stay there again orcourse if i come back to lisbon!
How were the surf lessons?
I took surflessons twice. Ricardo was my instructor he was super funny and fun and gave us great tips. It was the first time I went surfing and was a bit scared but I was totally over this after the first time and became addicted and went again the day after. I now wish I had booked more days at the Chillout Hostel so i could go more times. We went to a different beach each of the days and they were both so great!

How did you like the accommodation?
We had a great time hanging out in the garden basically all day! Meeting great people and we had a BBQ one night with all the people in the garden. We took the train to the beach one day because Rebecca at the reception told us it was great, and it was fantastic. We were sad we did not go more often. Next time we must stay in this hostel again but then more days! Our room was a 10-bed dorm but very comfortable on the top floor so we were close to the balcony which was great. It was a great way to meet people from all over the world, eat sleep and cook together!

How did you like the accommodation?
we took a double bed room on the 4th floor (or 3rd, i don't quite remember) place is a mess( especially the kitchen and chillout areas. I wouldn't want to cook a dinner there. Hot water supply was terrible. The heater was broken or smth, staff wasn't able to fix it. Shower room is a dissapointment. It is merged with the toilet and cabins are transparent O_o (perverts would love that). Space between shower cabins and sinks is almost nothing. It's impossible for two ppl to pass each other by. And everything in the shower room is so freakingly small! doll-house size. It's like owners wanted to squeeze the most out of every square meter of the place. Overall, place is nothing special. it's not cozy and I would say doesn't have that awesome hostel atmosphere other Portuguese hostels have. It's not even half as cool as it's shown on photos, they really invested in those pics I guess.

How did you like the accommodation?
It was the first time me and my girlfriend had stayed in a hostel and we loved it. It was super social, great location, in the centre but also lots of authentic things to experience in the neighbourhood. We usually don´t go to big cities but after Lisbon we have changed our minds. Lisbon is like a village feeling but has everything a city has! We went to the beach three times and it is super easy to get there and the beaches are great. We are very happy to have had this experience. Thanks chillout staff for all the tips and patience with us :-)
How were the surf lessons?
I took one surflesson and my girlfriend came with us to enjoy the beach. It was great! I had lots of fun, the instructor ( sorry I forgot his name ) was very funny and relaxed. The beach was great! I think the waves also because I was able to stand two times on the board!!

How did you like the accommodation?
Great city. Lots of choice for food and drinks. Get a travel card as it reduces prices into certain monuments. Try the local cuisine. The timeout market has lots of choice for food and drink but a bit on the pricey side.
How were the surf lessons?
The instructors were very good and cane lots of tips but the waves were very strong so difficult for first timers I think. I really enjoyed it but have surfed previously.

How did you like the accommodation?
The staff was so friendly, the whole hostel was simple but clean, the beds were comfortable, the breakfast was simple but very nice. The price per night is very good and very worth it. My favourite hostel that I've been too! Also the locations is really at the center of the city and is really nice to stroll around the region. Plus they offer different activities on the weekends, like movie night, sangria night! Best place to stay!
How were the surf lessons?
I went surfing in February! Can you imagine. It was a great day, we went to a beach with great waves to learn. The sun was shining and there we many people on the beach! They told me this in Portugal is often possible. I had alot of fun with the group and the teachers!
