Hikkaduwa
A well-equipped town, with several ATM’s that accept foreign cards and cash exchanges. It is a good idea to get yourself sorted financially in Hikkaduwa before travelling East along the coast, as Weligama is the next town with an ATM service.
Sri Lanka holds no less than three stunning National Marine Parks rich in bio diversity, one of which is centred along the shores of Hikkaduwa. Snorkelling is a popular pastime, as marine life flourishes along coral reserves just below the water’s surface. Here you can see two fish species that exist only on Sri Lankan reefs, the Pomacentrus Proteus and Chlorurus Rhakoura, as well as three different species of sea turtle. Venturing further out from the beach, many tour operators offer off-shore snorkelling trips that cater for the more adventurous.
Seafood forms the staple diet along Sri Lanka’s coast and no more so in Hikkaduwa. Sri Lankan’s enjoy a life in harmony with the sea, and sea food curries made of fresh fish are bursting with goodness, flavour, and make for the ideal surf fuel.
