Coxos
Level: Advanced
Set in a landscape that remains intact since first surfed in the early 70s, the wave of Coxos is the one that best symbolises the spirit of the local surfers and the values ??by which the world surf reserve is governed: protection and sustainability.
Formed by a reef that features a smooth slope, Bay of Two Brothers offers a classic configuration pointbreak, with the surf line along the contour of the coast from start to finish. It is a powerful wave, with different sections and which operates with various waving directions, and in ideal conditions provides barrels rides of several seconds in duration. The special nature of this wave was the initial spark that triggered the process of applying for World Surfing Reserve.
Wave Type: Right Long and powerful, with several tubular sections
Base type: Reef
Tide: low tide to half tide flood or ebb
Wind conditions: any but ideal conditions with O / NO Wind Conditions: SE NE

Surf angle: 40 surf Line
Length: 150 to 300 meters
Height of the waves: 0.5 to 3.0 meters

Season
Best time to go depends on your level above. July, August & September are the peak tourist months.
This is where you surf Europe's best coast line and let the fun begin. There are over 12 surf breaks along the Ericeira coast, with different options for all standards. With so much choice you'll feel like a kid in a sweet shop! The area was introduced in the Stormriders Surf Guide to Europe with the heading "Enter the Heartland".
World Surf Reserve
In 2011 it was awarded the title of 'World Surf Reserve', there are only 2 other places in the world that share the title: Santa Cruz, US and Manly, Australia.
If it is your first surfing holiday to Ericeira then head straight to Foz do Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches south of town, they are perfect beginner and intermediate surf spots. Closer to town is Praia do Sul. Another great beginner beach breaks. All best at mid tide but surfable at high and low tide also.
For Intermediates you have the reliable and safe reef break Ribeira d'Ilhas, which host the WSL World qualifying series surf championships every year. And for the more adventurous you have the world class Coxos. That's just naming a few, there are too many surf breaks to mention here!
Don't forget to explore further up the coast - 25 minutes away is Santa Cruz and an hour away is Peniche, home to the World renowned Supertubos and host of the Rip Curl Pro since 2009. 30 minutes south of Lisbon is the Cascais coast with the famous Praia do Guincho surf beach. And when north winds are blowing you can venture further south towards Carcevelos beach and the other surf spots along the Lisbon coast.

How did you like the accommodation?
The room and the hostel were perfect and even better than I expected. The location is right in the centre of town which made it a very convenient spot to get to the beach, go out for dinner, to relax, shop, get back easily from nights out. Everything. The room that I had - a private double was bright and sunny and well kept.
The restaurants that we tried all served delicious, healthy, fresh food and I particularly liked that they serve cheese with the bread without even asking.
How were the surf lessons?
I had 4 lessons. I particalurly enjoyed my lesson with Nuno as I got up on the board and rode quite a few waves. I was using a paddle board to grow my confidence in popping up which really helped. However as the paddle board is meant for standing on my hands suffered a bit with the top layer of skin rubbing off (Itried very hard ;o)) so I would recommend maybe a spare pair of gloves that people that use the paddle board could use.
I loved the sandy beach break that Nuno took us too as I'm a little afraid of hitting rocks due to a previous experience. However, Matadouro was good when the tide was in as you don't notice the rocks so much but once it starts going out I noticed my ability to stay on the board go down as I saw the rocks less than a foot beneath my board. It was also quite busy with lots of students from other surf schools that don't necessarily keep the 'carousel' in mind and so sometimes you feel that you may get hit with another board. Lily was very good at telling the other instructors to look after their own classes.

Travelled as a couple
How did you like the accommodation?
Very nice and extremely friendly with both staff and people staying. Family vibe to it
Very nice area, really good restaurants and beautiful beaches. We traveled as a young couple and it was lovely.
It is place to chill out and relax with very little to do. Relatively inexpensive.
How were the surf lessons?
I took a one to one with Nuno the owner and it was amazing. I tried to book another but they couldnt provide which i was disappointed about.
The group surf lessons were very generic with the instructors although pushing you off and giving you instruction, theywere not trying to progress the surfers to the green waves. At times the entire group of surfers were annoyed that after a number of lessons we were still continuously being told keep in line and wait to be pushed after a few days when most of the surfers could catch whitewater on their own.
Overall thought i got to green wave standard so i cant complain
Beaches were nice and not crowded however i was surprised with lack of surfboard rental facilities on the beach.
